Sex Offender Registration

Federal law requires that states must register sex offenders who have been convicted of a criminal offense against a victim who is a minor or if they have been convicted of a sexually violent offense. Information that must be given upon registration includes home and work addresses, identifying information such as internet identities, professional licenses, passport, etc. Not every sex offense requires registration, but if you are convicted of certain offenses registration is a penalty you face and it could be for life. To understand your rights and obtain the best representation possible, the Zabriskie team can provide a Salt Lake City sex crime defense lawyer to provide aggressive support for your case.

In Utah, the Sex Offender Registration Unit is responsible for managing the Sex Offender Notification and Registry (SONAR). This unit publishes sex offender registration information to the SONAR website for dissemination to the public and law enforcement agencies.

Registration information is verified periodically and if a sex offender is found to be non-compliant, further action will be taken which can result in jail time and probation. It is critical that if you are required to register that you do so to protect yourself from further criminal charges.

Why Registration is Required

Because of the nature of these crimes and the public outcry against repeat offenders, federal and state laws have been enacted to require released sex offenders to register. Sex offenders must register for at least 10 years and lifetime registration can be required for certain crimes. If an offender moves, he has 10 days to register a new address. The goal of such registration is to increase public safety by acting as a deterrent to further crimes, by increasing offender visibility to the public, and by providing investigative tools to law enforcement.

If you have been convicted of a sex offense in another state and have recently moved to Utah, contact us right away. Offenses which require registration are not the same state to state and you need legal counsel to ensure you have correct information about registration requirements in the state of Utah.

Contact a Salt Lake City Sex Crime Defense Attorney from the firm if you have been charged with a sex offense that may require registration in the state of Utah.
